Victoria, B.C. — 16 January 2026 — The Victoria Genealogical Society (VGS) is pleased to announce the launch of its new Media Hub, a centralized online resource designed to make it easier than ever for journalists, partners, and the public to access information about the Society, its services, and its ongoing contributions to family history research in Victoria, across Canada, and around the world.
Established in 1978, the Victoria Genealogical Society is a non-profit, volunteer-run registered charity dedicated to supporting and promoting family history research. With growing interest in genealogy driven by DNA testing, digital archives, and personal storytelling, the new Media Hub responds to increasing requests for information about VGS programs, expertise, and community initiatives.
“Our new Media Hub reflects our commitment to accessibility, transparency, and public education,” said a VGS spokesperson. “It provides a one-stop location for media and community members to learn who we are, what we do, and how we support people in discovering their family stories.”
The Media Hub offers a wide range of resources, including:
- VGS Backgrounder — a comprehensive overview of the Society’s history, programs, and community impact
- Mission, Vision, and Values — outlining VGS’s focus on education, research, and service
- Governance and Volunteer Leadership — information about current directors and organizational structure
- News Releases and Articles — updates on projects, partnerships, and initiatives
- Events Calendar — details and registration for educational genealogy and history programs
- Media Assets — approved branding, images, and documents for publication
- Media Interview Requests — direct access to arrange interviews with knowledgeable VGS representatives
In addition to its digital services, VGS operates the Genealogy Learning and Research Centre located in the Royal Oak Shopping Centre in Victoria. Staffed by knowledgeable volunteers, the Centre provides in-person research assistance, guidance on records and databases, and hosts meetings and community events for both members and non-members.
“Genealogy is more than names and dates—it’s about understanding the social, cultural, and historical context of families and communities,” said the spokesperson. “Through our Learning and Research Centre, our educational events, and now our Media Hub, we aim to make that exploration welcoming and achievable for everyone.”
As interest in local history, migration stories, and DNA-based research continues to grow, the Society hopes the Media Hub will strengthen relationships with media organizations, educators, heritage groups, and the broader public.
The Victoria Genealogical Society is a registered Canadian charity (CRA #0951210-21) and relies on volunteers and community support to deliver its programs and services.
